7 TIPS TO MAKE SURE NOTHING DISTRACTS YOU WHILE YOU STUDY!

You've finally made time to study. You've set up your desk, sat down with an arsenal of pens and markers, got your notes out and you're ready to start. Concentration is good at first, but it soon fades. Suddenly everything seems more interesting. You end up glancing at your phone every minute to see if someone has texted you, reading random articles instead of sources, then ending up on YouTube watching cat videos. Don't worry, it's normal. Here are some tips to make sure you don't get distracted while you study.



1. Put the phone away

Mobile is one of the biggest threats to our productivity. Even if write my essay you mute it, it's hard not to glance at it every five minutes to check for notifications or browse your favourite sites. The easiest solution is to put it away, because even if you decide not to open it, it's not always so easy to stick to it. But learning on the machine is no better. To help, you can use sites and apps that block distractions for a set time.


2. Take breaks

It's often hard to concentrate because we've become too hungry or tired, but we don't want to stop. Stop fighting yourself! For the most effective learning, you need to listen to your body's signals. If you're tired, lie down for up to three quarters of an hour. If you're hungry, eat something healthy and quick to prepare. This could be fruit, porridge, or a piece of muesli. Coffee, or even exercise, can break the monotony, and then you can carry on feeling refreshed.


3. Break up the curriculum

Don't sit there thinking you're going to learn everything in four hours! You'll get bored after a while and you'll lose interest. Break it down into chunks, so you can focus better and the material will stick longer.


4. Use a hitchhiker

The Pomodoro technique is one of the most effective, combining pauses with divided lessons. Pick a section and set a stopwatch for 25 minutes. It's a good idea to download an app for this on your mobile, so you only see on the screen how much time you have left. It also discourages you from clicking on any of the usual distractions. Until the time runs out, just focus on the material you've chosen and try to learn everything from that. Then take a 5 minute break and repeat this. After four Pomodoro sessions, rest for at least 30-45 minutes. This is how you schedule how much time you allow yourself for distraction. You can also use Pomodoro as a basis to set your own time for breaks and study time.


5. Reward yourself

When you've successfully completed the day's dose of learning, reward yourself! This could be a cookie, a movie with friends, or an episode of your favourite TV show. You know best what you'd really enjoy, and give yourself that. You can also give out small rewards during study breaks after you've done well, to make you feel more like doing it all.


6. Don't study with your friends

Separate socialising from studying! As good as it sounds to study together, it usually turns into a conversation. Learn the material on your own and then test each other buy persuasive essay before the exam. This will refresh the information, and you may get questions from each other that you wouldn't have thought of on your own.


7. Listen to music that helps you concentrate

Sometimes you can really concentrate in complete silence. If you're one of those people who needs something in the background, it should preferably not be too loud or with lyrics. There are sites and apps with music and sound effects specifically designed for learning. What really helps each person varies. Some people are soothed by the tapping of rain, others by the sound of a café lo-fi, but sometimes it's meditative music that really works. It's worth trying lots of things to find out what works best for you.
